The Humane Society of Decatur and Macon County originated July 12, 1923. We are a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization and donations to us are tax deductible. The Humane Society is a no-kill facility. Our primary goals are to reduce pet overpopulation and find forever, loving homes for the sick, injured, abused, neglected, and abandoned animals in Decatur and Macon county that come into our facility.
While we are supportive of the Macon County Animal Control and Care Facility and work with them for the benefit of the animals in our community, we are a separate entity.
Our TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) program for feral cats helps to reduce cat overpopulation. The Humane Society of Decatur and Macon County has spayed and neutered thousands of cats under our TNR program. All cats in the program are spayed or neutered, vaccinated for rabies and distemper, left ear tipped, and returned to their area or relocated to barn homes.
We offer discount spay/neuter programs throughout the year to low income, unemployed pet owners, senior citizens, and qualifying persons in need. Local veterinarian clinics help those who qualify with discount spay/neuter services.
The Humane Society's funding comes primarily from donations from the public. We receive no state or federal funding. Financial support through donations is a must for us to help the animals in our facility as well as continue our TNR and discount spay/neuter programs.
Our mission statement: To provide relief of suffering animals, to prevent cruelty to animals, to assist in the placement of animals, to promote spaying and neutering, and providing education to the community for the humane treatment of animals.
